ultimate beauty product of 2012

I've seen a lot of 'best products of 2012' posts popping up on my dashboard this week. I've enjoyed reading them & did my own version last year. This year i fancied doing something a bit different; instead of rounding up my favourite picks from the past year i wanted to choose just one product that was the best product of 2012.

It was really tricky to choose only one product! I wanted it to be something i use almost daily, something i've discovered this year and something that causes me to have a mini breakdown when it runs out.

After a morning of rummaging through my products, i stumbled across the chosen one. I hadn't even thought about this as it's something i pick up everyday to use. I first discovered it in May this year & i think my hunt for the perfect mascara has ended. My ultimate beauty product of 2012 is...

Benefit They're Real Mascara, i just love the way it makes my lashes look! It retails for a hefty £18.50 but i won't have to spend any more money testing out other mascara's. I find this really does what it says box & couldn't really ask for more from a mascara. My MUA undressed palette came a close second!

So, now you know what my ultimate beauty product of 2012 is, i want to know what yours would be?! Maybe it's a fragrance, lip blam, hair dryer...it's so hard to just choose one thing!

Below I've tagged five bloggers to give this tag a go.
Sandra from The Black Pearl blog
Becky from Beckys Makeup
Corrie from Dizzy Brunette3
Sophia from Tattooed Tea Lady
Estee from Essiebutton

If your reading this i want you to do the tag too :) tweet me with a link when it's up - @kiamakemeup

Happy New Year! Hope you had a good 2012, make 2013 the best.year.ever. :) x

top six favourite blog posts in December

Hope you all had a brill Christmas, i always get a bit sad when it's all over. I spent this year with family, eating way too many mince pies and watching christmas telly. Santa bought me lots of lovely things, hope you got what you wanted!

If your not familiar with this sort of post (read my last one here) the idea behind it is i show you some of my favourite blogs posts from the past month in the hope you discover some new bloggers and get some inspiration. I don't think we share the blogs we love enough, I'm going to try and make this a regular thing!

  1. As soon as I saw this post, i knew i had to share it with you. In this post Geneva talks about the concept of re-gifting (which i'm cool with) and write her top tips on how to do it successfully!
  2. I've been a fan of Sarah's blog for a while now, it was her amazing illustrations that first caught my eye. She mainly blogs about fashion and her blog post are just beautiful to look at! Her photo's look editorial - you must check her out.
  3. For me Adrienne is THE queen of reviews. Her reviews are always so detailed, she swatches everthing, includes a rating of each product and her photographs are so unique. I have no idea how she has time to keep writing all her brilliant posts! I loved reading this review of the Kardashion sister's new make up collection 'Khroma'
  4. I wanted to make a few DIY presents this year & this one Meg posted is just genius.  Make sure you check out her gift guides too, some really unusual presents on there!
  5. Another great DIY gift idea. This Christmas Tree Brownie gift is super easy to make. Handy if you need to do any last minute gifts!
  6. My current favourite fashion blog, Lydia puts together pieces that i would never think to. if you've not heard of her - your missing out. Check out Lydia's blog here.

What do you think of my favourite picks?

last minute gift - Xen Tan Light Gradual set

What do you mean you still haven't bought all your Christmas presents?! Don't worry i'm off out last minute shopping tonight; i promise myself every year things will be different and i'll get all my presents bought in January but it never happens! Maybe next year..
If you have any fake-tan friends or just fancy a little treat for your self, this set from Xen-Tan would be prefect. I love a bit of Xen-Tan, it has to be my favourite fake tan brand. I've been testing this set out for 5 days now and i would recommend this to any pale girls like myself! The colour looks very natural, it has a  lovely sweet scent and the tanning mitt makes applying it so much easier.

Here's what Xen-Tan have to say about the products inside the kit.

Xen-Tan Transform Daily Self-Tan 177ml
Una Healy's favourite tanning product, Xen-Tan Transform is perfect for those who want a natural-looking tan that develops gradually and leaves skin looking radiant and healthy for days.

- Xen-Tan Body Scrub 236ml
Xen-Tan's gentle exfoliant is designed to successfully prepare your skin for a beautiful, natural-looking tan, and help it last even longer. A little really does go a long way, so it's a great value choice too.

Lush fair trade honey shampoo

I do enjoy a trip to Lush, even if it's just for a sniff. I love their bath products and i LOVE their showers gels but I've never tried their shampoo before...

Lush say - "This bottle is full of the power of flowers, collected and concentrated for you by the bees.
While they were collection the pollen, we searched the meadows for beautiful flowers
to fragrance their work". Doesn't that make you want to try it even more?!

Now then, I'm not really a big fan of honey but I thought this product didn't really smell like the kind of honey you'd eat. It has a very strong scent which is quite hard to describe, a bit florally with a hint of orange & honey - i quite like it! This lathers really well and once rinsed out, your hair will smell delicious.

I use about a 10p sized dollop each time & for quite a small bottle it seems to be lasting for ages! I have dry bleached hair & i find this helps to restore shine and moisture to my over-worked locks.

You can purchase this for £7 for 110g from Lush stores and online

What do you think of Lush? :)

winter make up favourites

L-R Liz Earle eye colour brush, Maybelline Superstay 24 hour lipstick in Pink on Pink, Rimmel Lasting finish Lip Tint, Collection Shimmer Shade Bronzer, No7 Nail Varnish in Temptress, Collection illuminating concealer in 2, Revlon Nail Enamel in Bewitching, MUA Undressed Palette and OPI Rainbow Connection.

Just a pick of a few make up favourites this winter. I do like to change my look as the seasons change, i just had my hair dyed a bit of a warmer blonde & had to buy some chunky jumpers! I'm currently loving dark nails, bronzed eyes and dewy skin.

What are your Winter make up must haves?

DIY Gift - make your own glossybox

I thought it would be nice this year to do some DIY gift ideas as well as the normal gift guides. Beauty boxes have taken the blogging world by storm this year, instead of giving someone a beauty box for Christmas why not make your own? You can fill it with products you think they'll love or with products that haven't worked for you! I think it's a bit more special is you hand select the products rather than buying ready-made beauty set. I've used an old glossybox and filled it with tissue paper & put 8 beauty products inside. This looks quite nice without wrapping the products or box up. I'm going to tie a Christmas card to the lid and wrap some ribbon around it - easy peasy pamper present.
Will you be making your own beauty box for someone? I love receiving DIY presents!

Zarrin Beauty Box in Adele

I love seeing how other beauty bloggers store their beauty products. I  pop all my nail varnishes in a glass kilner jar and store most of my make up in little beauty bags. Recently, I was sent this lovely box from beauty-boxes.com. They sell a wide range of beauty boxes to keep your make up organised. I fell in love with this cath kidson-esque floral print instantly, look how pretty it is!

The inside is really spacious and has a little mirror on the top and also a pouch for holding things such a make up brushes. The quality of the box is very good, beauty-boxes.com actually offer a years warranty on any defective materials which is reassuring! The box is sturdy so i'll be using it when i take my make up travelling with me. It also comes with a lock to keep your contents safe.

I thought, as it is nearly Christmas (13 days people!) this would make such a cute gift idea. If you filled it with beauty products, below, you could make a DIY hamper & whoever you give it to can re-use the box!

What do you think of this beauty box? I like it a lot.

ChloƩ Eau De Parfum Review

Perfume is my new obsession, which is becoming a bit expensive! ChloĆ© Eau De Parfum* is my most recent edition, it's described as having a powdery rose sent with notes of lily, peony, freesia and lychee, as well as amber and cedarwood. Just look at the pretty bottle is comes in!

You only need a couple of sprays of this scent as it's quite strong & lasts for ages. It really lingers on the skin much longer than any other perfume i've tried. Overall, this powdery rose scented perfume from Chloe is a classic. If you like florally, flirty, feminine scents - this is right up your street.

You can pick Chloe up from escentual who have 15% off the RRP. It's £56.95 for 75 ml & comes in three different sizes.

Have you tried this before?

Christmas party prepping products

Nice bit of alliteration there. I've been loving all the Christmas related posts lately, SO excited for Christmas! A few weeks ago a little black box arrived at my door which included some party prepping products from Holland & Barrett. I always enjoy getting ready to go out & thought it'd be nice to share with you some of the new products I've discovered!

Miaflora Coconut Oil £6.99 for 207ml
I hear a lot of bloggers rave about coconut oil, celebs such as Miranda Kerr & Gwyenth Paltrow are also big fans. Did it live up to the hype? Well, I tried it as a moisturiser  i used it in the shower, i used it like a hair mask and i also mixed it with sea salt (apparently Jennifer Aniston does this!) to make a body scrub....it's such a versatile product it's been brilliant at battling the winter elements. It's definitely worth a try, if you don't like it you can always add it to a korma...
Fat Metaboliser currently half price -£5.49 for 120
So if your having trouble getting into your LBD for Christmas this is suppose to offer some aid. It combines a unique formula which contains vitamin B6 to contribute to normal energy yeilding metabolism as well as protein and glycogen. This should be used whilst exercising and eating a low-fat diet. Normally retails for £10.99 but is half price right now!

Holland & Barrett's Skin, Hair and Nails Formula £3.84 for 60 (on offer)
I've always been intrigued by supplements & whether they really do work. I've been trailing these for a couple of weeks now & my nails do feel stronger. I can't tell yet if they've has an effect on my skin or hair but i'll keep you updated! The caplets contain vitamin A, vitamin E and  selenium. These normally retail for £7.69 but are on offer till the 5th Dec - be quick!

As well as the products pictured above, some other of my essentials for getting ready are Xen-tan Absoultue Luxe, tangle teezer, benefit they're real and my Jemma Kidd eyelash curlers!

I thought it's only right to include a few of my favourite Christmas dresses - I love dress shopping, after spending waaay to long looking at dresses online i've chosen my top 3 favourites for a bit of party dress inspiration! 1,2 & 3.

What are your go to products for getting ready? Let me know if you've done any Christmassy posts lately, i love reading them! Also, i've got some DIY present tutorials coming up so keep your eyes peeled :)

what's on my bedside table?

I read a couple of these posts a few months ago and decided things had to change. My bedside table is really just a dumping ground for junk that has no where else to go, so i made it my mission to keep it clutter free & looking nice.

I'm one of those weird people who enjoys taking of their make up so it's been quite nice to add some extra beauty products to my night time routine! The products i have always chop and change so i get better use of things but i'll always have some hand cream, body lotion, facial oil and vaseline to hand!

Dr Organic Manuka Honey Nail & Hand Cream
Dr Organic is a brand sold in Holland & Barrett & I have to say it's one of my favourite skincare brands. This hand cream a very moisturising but not at all greasy. Just what i need to get rid of dry hands & cuticles. I don't really like honey but this smells so goooood!
Aveda Foot Relief
I normally forget about my feet, so having some foot cream on my bedside table reminds me to moisterise before bed. I love this one from Aveda because it has a herbal formula which gently exfoliates and nourishes my feet - perfect after a long day.
Burts Bees Milk & Honey Body Lotion
I don't know about you but my skin seems to be a lot drier now winter has arrived. At an attempt to fight off parched skin I've been moistening every night with this body lotion. It has a rich formula without being to heavy and sinks in quickly.
Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate
I don't like to use a facial oil every night as they are quite heavy, i use this once or twice a week to rejuvante my skin. It has a lovely relaxing aroma to it and doesn't feel greasy.
Good old vaseline, This is one of my all time favourite products. I like to use it on my lips to get them super soft and i also apply some to my eyelashes as i find it helps them to grow longer. Someone said on twitter, sorry i forgot your name!, that they use it on their eyebrows to keep them full so i've been doing that lately!

Ta-da, that's my pre-sleep beauty routine, after that i get my comfy slipper socks, get a cup of tea & catch up with my favourite blogs. lovely :)

What's on your bedside table?

Gift Idea - Butter London Holiday Lips & Tips

I don't know why but I can't wait for Christmas! Here's my first gift idea post, I love it when bloggers post gift guides, they find such good stuff! This cute gift is from Butter London. I've never tried the brand before but I can now confirm - I'm impressed.

The Lips & Tips set comes with a matching nail lacquer and lip gloss. I have the shade Rosie Lee which is a lovely glittery pink with flecks of silver. It can be quite tricky buying make up as a presents but I think this set is a safe bet. The shades are very wearable and elegant and the nail varnish is long-lasting. The lip gloss has a  nice vanilla scent to it too. I love the quirky product packaging and square nail varnish bottle! Will be purchasing some of the nail varnishes from their Christmas collection.

The Lips & Tips set retails for £21.00, which I think is quite pricey but it still works out cheaper than buying the two items separately! You can purchase Butter London from Harvey Nichols & www.butterlondon.com

Looking at the other Christmas kits Butter London do, my absolute favourite has to be the Holiday remover kit (below) which includes three scented, yes SCENTED nail varnish removers. How cool is that?

What's on your beauty wishlist this Christmas? I've got a few more gift ideas coming up including some DIY ones!

The Fragrance Shop Discovery Club

The Discovery Club is a new idea where you get sent a box of the latest fragrance samples to try at home. I think this is such a good idea for fragrance lovers or even if you don't like choosing perfumes in shops. Boxes are sent out quarterly and include five samples, discount vouchers and an information booklet. All comes packaged in a little blue box. The five perfume samples in their first box includes Hugo Boss Nuit, Paco rabanne Million, Ralph Lauren 2, Lancome La Vie Est Belle and Swaroski Aura.

I always have trouble choosing a new fragrance so the discovery box would be really helpful! I think it would make a cute gift for a fragrance fanatic too. Also, the little sample sizes are perfect for popping in my handbag.

The Discover club retails for a very reasonable £5 per box, it's sent out quarterly & you can cancel your subscription at any time. For more information have a look on The Fragrance Shop's website here.

With the success of beauty boxes I think this idea will do well. I know a lot of people aren't keen on receiving perfume samples in beauty boxes, but what do you think of the Discovery Club?

September Favourites

This months favourites are going to be a little different as I'll be including things i'm loving other then beauty products - check them out at the bottom :)
Jergens Skin Firming Body Moisteriser £4.99 - This is a really nice light-weight moisteriser, it has a fresh clean scent and dries quickly. It claims to visably firm skin, i'm not sure if it does, sorry!
One thing i don't really like about this is the packaging, they've re-done it but i much prefer the old version.
Benefit They're Real Mascara £18.50 - My all time favourite mascara! Reviewed it here.
Orginal Source Vanilla and Raspberry shower gel £2.99 - next time you see this, smell it & you'll understand why it's in my favs.
Herbal Essense Smooth & Soft Conditioner £3.99 - I have really thick hair that get's quite dry so i use a big dollop of conditioner and this leaves my hair super soft. I have heard Herbal Essense test on animals, does anyone know if this is true? If so i need to find a new conditioner!
Babyliss Curling Wand £19.99 - I prefer wavy hair so i curl my hair with this at night, sleep on them & they're nice and loose in the morning!
Barry M  Nail Paint in Pink Iridescent £2.99 - in I love using this glitter nail varnish as a top coat, makes my nails looks sparkly!
No7 Perfect Lips Pencil £6.75 - Lisa Eldridge makes me buy so much make up, naughty lady. I bought this after seeing her using it in one of her videos. It's just a really nice, soft natural lip liner!

Favourite blog this month is Ring My Bell. I've been really into fashion blogs lately & this one by Ashley is one of my favs, Ashley is a British actress living in LA, if you watch Revenge on e4 you'll probably recognise her! Also, favourite song at the minute is One Day by Asif Avidan. It's just one of those lovely songs & it's had over 20 million views on youtube - you must listen to it! Favourite shop has to be TK Maxx, they've re-done all there shops near me so they look so much nicer & their stock seems better.

Tweet me your September favs, I love reading them :) @kiamakemeup What are your plans for October?

Lush Gorilla Vanillary Perfume review

My favourite scent EVER has to be vanilla. So when I found out LUSH had re-worked their lovely vanillary perfume range, it made me very happy! The range now contains Fair Trade gourmet vanilla beans which are skillfully transformed into their vanilla absolute. I thought the scent was a lot richer, darker than other vanilla perfumes out there; It smells like real vanilla, not the synthetic kind. The scent seems a lot more grown-up, it's very strong when you first apply it but leaves a lovely sweet scent after a few minutes. It has hints of burnt caramel and jasmine - i just want to eat it! Fans of 'snow fairy' will probably like this. I found it lingers on the skin for a while, normally half way through the day I'd top up. The size is perfect for popping it in my handbag. I love that this product also comes in a solid stick, balm, mini spray or bottle.

RRP £12.50 for the spritzer, if you wanted to test it out first LUSH sell a little sample sized spray for £2.75!

Have you tried any Gorilla perfumes at LUSH?

Bargain haul - Boots and Dorothy Perkins

Hello nice normal people.
As we've started to say bye to summer (did we ever say hello?!) I've been loving seeing what new products are being launched and what's on trend. Also my favourite thing about September is that most shops do double student discount! I've only bought a few things this month but got some pretty good deals!
I don't normally shop in Dorothy Perkins but they were advertising that they did a 15% student discount so I had a little look inside. I spotted these two beauties and had to buy them. They also do student discount on sale items so I paid £8.50 instead of £10. No bad as they retail for £28!
I had a No7 voucher so decided it would be rude not to use it! I wanted a new lipstick so I went with 'Pink Whisper'. No7 do so many lipsticks it took me ages to decide on one. Also, I asked last night on twitter what nail varnish shades you were loving at the minute and lots of people recommended Essie polishes, and in particular 'Bikini So Teeny' which is a lovely light blue. I spotted a similar shade at the No7 counter called 'Minty Fresh'. I picked up some face wipes for my sister, i much prefer using a moonie!) as I didn't really need any of there skincare products; but buying three items meant me getting the nail varnish for free as all No7 is on 3 for 2 at the minute, happy days!

What have you been buying lately?

A/W trend: big brows

Does anyone else wish eyebrows didn't need plucking? It's one of those things I don't look forward to but I
guess you have to if you don't want one eyebrow. Bold brows are BIG this season(literately), they dominated S/S '12 catwalks and looks like they are here to stay this winter and also Spring next year! Models at NYFW such as Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs and Jason Wu were all sporting big bushy brows. I'm kind of glad about this as it means we can step away from tweezers/wax/threading for a bit whilst out brows grow out!

My go to brow kit lately has been this beauty from Japonesque. The contents come nicely packed in a little pink case which is handy  for travelling. My favourite item from the set has to be the brow powders. I've always used a brow pencil but since discovering this kit i much prefer powders. The palette comes with two mini brushes, i normally wouldn't use brushes which come free with products but the quality of these are excellent. I like the little stencils that come with the kit, yet to try them out! The clear gel is very handy as my eyebrows never seem to stay in place.

The Japonesque brow kit retails for £21.00 and £1 is donated to Breast Cancer Awareness Research. Available from HQ Hair website.

Will you be trying the bold brow trend? What are your favourite brow products?

How much is your face worth?

Yep another 'How much is your face worth' tag - I've seen a few of these lately! I have never done a tag on here before but it's been really interesting to see how much people are willing to spend on make up. I've seen some crazy prices from £300 to under £50. Hoping all mine comes to under £100!

MAC Pro Longwear - £24.00
GOSH concealer - £4.99
MAC Select moisturecover - £14.50
MUA Undressed Palette - £4
Benefit They're Real* - £18.50
MUA Lip Boom in Doin good* - £4
Collection Shimmer Shade in Blushalious & Way-To-Glow - £3.99 each

TOTAL - £77.97

Phew. I can cope with that amount. I spend the most on my foundation because I think it's important to get the base right. My mascara is VERY expensive but I love it and probably will purchase it when it dries out. I don't wear lipstick everyday, sometimes I'll just use a lip balm. If I don't want a full face on I'll pop on some mascara & a bit of concealer. I use two concealers because my under-eye dark circles are quite bad! The Undressed Palette is brilliant, the shades are so pretty & neutral - in the photo above I'm just wearing the lightest shade all over my lid. I've missed out highlighter as I only wear it once or twice a week; but my go to one is Benefit Sunbeam. Just lately, I've had the urge to but loads of new make up! Maybe because of the new season and new make up trends? I haven't bought anything yet but let me know what you've been loving lately ;)

Would love to know how much your face is worth?!

29 August 2012

you should start saying "YES!"

"Do you mean you can't, or you won't?" - one of those annoying things grown-ups say when you don't want to do something. Majority of us have heard ourselves say: "I can't....I'm too busy/don't have enough time," and I'm quite guilty of this! But lately I've been trying to break the cycle of saying no. Now, I'm not the most spontaneous person; however I have found that saying yes really can benefit you.

I first found out about this whole concept of saying yes more, was when I picked up last months copy of Boots own Health & Beauty magazine. There was an article on a campaign they're doing this summer called 'Say YES to summer'. It really inspired me to be more spontaneous and think positively.

As a young person in this day and age, I know & empathise with how easy it is to feel negatively about things such as the future. Less and less jobs are available, more graduates are unable to find work and I feel that there's just not a lot of support for young people out there. So keeping motivated and saying yes isn't easy, but hopefully this post will help.

So my aim over these past couple of months was to say yes and to embrace those spontaneous moments.
1. I said yes to starting my own business 'Moonie'. I had to put aside negative thoughts and be brave. It was definitely worth taking the risk, and now it's up and running I'm so happy I turned my idea into a real business.
2. I've always enjoyed reading but I hadn't read a book in ages, I kept putting it off because I was just too busy. So, I donated some old books to a charity shop and replaced them with new ones. I make time for reading now and I have also said yes to buying a subscription to Company magazine.
3. This week I said yes to trying something new. I treated myself to a nail varnish, it's a dark purple colour - something I'd never really wear but it's a refreshing change from what I'd normally choose.(and it was half price!)
4. When asked if I wanted to take part in a charity walk for Macmillian Cancer Support I said yes! It's in October so I've got a bit of time to prepare my lazy body.

After just a few months of thinking more positively and saying yes it has changed me so much! Simple changes to your life can make a big difference. Even the little things like treating yourself to a pamper session or a bright lipstick. Why don't you call that friend you haven't spoken to for ages or take a day trip somewhere you've always wanted to go? Next month I'm going to say yes to clearing my wardrobe of old clothes - something I've been meaning to do for a year now!

What will you say yes to this week?

* P.S It may look like it, but this is not a sponsored post! Boots haven't told me to write this, I'm not affiliated with the company. It's simply something I wanted to share with you!
